We are each the hero of our own stories, and in this sense, we travel alone. Yet we are all part of something bigger than ourselves. Our stories weave and intersect in beautiful and unexpected ways. This is the dance of living, and we each have our roles.
On Peter's special naming day, we were joined by his family community, who represent his ancestry. We were joined by new friends, who have been present in the growing of our family. Our protectors of ritual were Peter's godparents, Tristan and Marek. We trust that they will continue to play this protecting and expanding role in Peter's life. My father, mother, and sister are my pioneer, nurturer, and warrior of community. In these roles they are my mentors. In a very real way, they manifested this day. My mother-in-law kindly and artfully captured memories of the ceremony in the form of these photos, and my brother-in-law added color and music to our celebration feast.
We present to you: Peter Kai Gabriel Falconer.
The following poetry mash-up was read aloud by our congregation. After each line, the reader stepped into the inner circle and placed a rock inside, symbolizing their commitment to Peter's growth and his place in our community.
"Welcome Peter to this world,
Your world with all the colors of the rainbow,
new gifts with each new sun
Green, green and sacred
From all its drink and all its love
We stand with pride here
We offer thanks with all our hearts
For here in this place, beneath these trees
We welcome you as one, we welcome you as one
Trees for peace
Selected stones and a totem
Symbols of blessings
From this, your new home." -adapted from Connie's Song by Xavier Rudd
"Peter, you are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here." -adapted from Desiderata by Max Ehrmann
"Our children are not our children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through us but not from us,
And though they are with us yet they belong not to us.
We may give them our love but not our thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
We may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which we cannot visit, not even in our dreams.
We may strive to be like them,
but should not seek to make them like us.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
We are the bows from which our children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends us with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable." -adapted from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
We stand here today as your community before you Peter. One day we will be here no longer.
Already, some of us have passed.
"On that day, do not look at that space and weep;
We are not there. We do not sleep.
We are a thousand winds that blow.
We are the diamond glint on snow.
We are the sun on ripened grain.
We are the gentle Autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush,
We are the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
We are the soft starlight at night.
that you do not stand alone." -adapted from Do Not Weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye
In this community,
no matter how scattered,
you will always find home.
Seth is the man of my heart and of my home. He is my sun and my moon, and I am his. We travel together, and that is something infinitely beautiful and precious.
Emma made me a mother. She gave me a key to a whole new world. She shines light into our lives, and brings sparkle to my every day.
Peter grew from an invisible seed of potential in the fertile ground of my very body. He transformed me. I will forever bear the marks of carrying him. He is not my belonging but my blessing. We stood together, on the earth, beneath the sky, to ritually name him in front of his community. We did this to celebrate the beginning of his journey, and in recognition that he is the hero of his own life story.
This post was written in exchange for a therapy session with Colleen of the Midlands House of Healing. Our last meeting in particular, as well as its place in a pearl necklace of energy work, prepared me for this naming day. Colleen channels qi, or universal energy, through her reiki treatments. This gave me the courage, strength, and wisdom I needed to present my son. From the first moment I became aware of his presence in my spirit and body, we were joined. Both his and my lifeblood depended on this union, in a material sense of life and death, but also in spiritual and creative realms. His supernatural birth in theatre, attended by a team of surgeons and healers, was the first severing of this bond. Together we then inhabited the rosy dawn of postpartum, and the fourth trimester. Colleen supported this time, and as it ended, once again she stood by my side, with love and strength. The thin line of cord that is tied beneath my ribs and runs out to my son ran a little further on this day. I am grateful I was strong enough to celebrate this unfolding, and this in part I owe to my spiritual mentor. Colleen, thank you.
